How Stripe fees are calculated

Stripe charges a percentage of each successful payment plus a fixed amount. In the US, a domestic card costs 2.9% + 30¢, so a $100 payment carries a $3.20 fee and you receive $96.80. In the eurozone, a standard EEA card costs 1.5% + €0.25, so an €80 membership carries a €1.45 fee.

The fixed part matters more on small payments: on a $10 drop-in, 30¢ alone is 3% of the price. International cards, premium cards and currency conversion add to the percentage.

Stripe’s standard rates by country

Published standard pricing for online payments, checked on stripe.com on 19 October 2026. Custom and volume pricing differ; your Stripe Dashboard shows the exact fee on each payment.

  • United States: 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards, +1.5% for international cards, +1% for currency conversion, +0.5% for manually entered cards. ACH Direct Debit is 0.8%, capped at $5.
  • Canada: 2.9% + CA$0.30 for domestic cards, +0.8% for international cards, +2% for currency conversion. Pre-authorised debits are 1% + CA$0.40, capped at CA$5.
  • United Kingdom: 1.5% + 20p for standard UK cards, 2.8% + 20p for premium UK cards, 2.5% + 20p for EEA cards and 3.15% + 20p for international cards. Bacs Direct Debit is 1% (minimum 20p, capped at £4).
  • Eurozone and EEA: 1.5% + €0.25 for standard EEA cards, 2.8% + €0.25 for premium EEA cards, 2.5% + €0.25 for UK cards and 3.15% + €0.25 for international cards. SEPA Direct Debit is €0.35.
  • Switzerland: 2.9% + CHF 0.30 for Swiss cards and 3.25% + CHF 0.30 for international cards.
  • Brazil: 3.99% + R$0.39 for domestic cards, +2% for international cards. Boleto is R$3.45 per paid boleto.
  • Australia: 1.65% + A$0.30 for domestic cards and 3.5% + A$0.30 for international cards (fees include GST). BECS Direct Debit is 1% + A$0.30, capped at A$3.50.

How to charge so you receive a set amount

To keep a set amount after fees, divide it plus the fixed fee by one minus the percentage: (amount + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − rate). To receive $100 from a US card, charge (100 + 0.30) ÷ 0.971 = $103.30. The “I want to receive” mode does this for you, including Stripe Billing and software fees.

Before adding a card surcharge, check the rules where you operate. Surcharges on consumer cards are banned in the EU and the UK, and several US states restrict them. Many clubs build the cost into the membership price instead.

Lowering fees on membership payments

  • Offer bank debits for recurring memberships: ACH, SEPA, Bacs and BECS usually cost far less than cards on larger amounts.
  • Encourage longer billing periods: one quarterly or yearly payment carries one fixed fee instead of three or twelve.
  • Avoid currency conversion by charging in the currency of your bank account.
  • Check what your gym software adds on top of Stripe. Some platforms add a percentage to every online payment.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Stripe charge per transaction?

On standard pricing, 2.9% + 30¢ for US domestic cards, 1.5% + €0.25 for standard EEA cards in the eurozone, 1.5% + 20p for standard UK cards, 2.9% + CA$0.30 in Canada and 1.65% + A$0.30 in Australia. International cards, premium cards and currency conversion cost more.

Does Stripe charge a monthly fee?

Not for payments on standard pricing: you pay per successful transaction. If you use Stripe Billing to manage subscriptions on pay-as-you-go pricing, Stripe adds 0.7% of Billing volume.

How do I calculate what to charge to cover Stripe fees?

Use (amount you want + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − percentage fee). For $100 on a US card: (100 + 0.30) ÷ (1 − 0.029) = $103.30. Switch the calculator to “I want to receive” to do it for any country and payment method.

Does Stripe return its fee when I refund a payment?

On standard pricing, issuing most refunds is free, but the processing and currency conversion fees from the original payment are not returned.

Are these the exact fees on my account?

They are Stripe’s published standard rates, checked on 19 October 2026. Custom, volume and IC+ pricing differ, and rates change. Edit the rate fields to match your account; your Stripe Dashboard shows the exact fee on every payment.
