IBJJF minimum time and age rules (adults)
The IBJJF Graduation System sets a minimum time at each adult belt and a minimum age to hold it:
- White to blue: no minimum time; minimum age 16.
- Blue to purple: at least 2 years at blue; minimum age 16.
- Purple to brown: at least 18 months at purple; minimum age 18.
- Brown to black: at least 1 year at brown; minimum age 19.
How the estimate works
Each belt has a typical duration for an adult training three times a week, adding up to about eight years from white to black. More sessions shorten that with diminishing returns; fewer sessions lengthen it.
The IBJJF minimums are floors, not targets: the calculator only falls back to them when you train a lot. Your instructor decides when you are promoted — this is a planning guide, not a promise.
What actually speeds up promotion
- Consistency over months, not intense weeks followed by breaks.
- Rolling with a range of training partners and sizes.
- Competing, which many coaches weigh when promoting.
- Reviewing and drilling the techniques your coach expects at your belt.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a BJJ black belt?
Typically 8–12 years for adults training regularly. Under IBJJF rules the theoretical minimum is about 4.5 years after blue belt, and nobody can hold black before age 19.
How long does it take to get a blue belt in BJJ?
Usually 1–2 years training around three times a week. The IBJJF sets no minimum time at white belt, but adults must be at least 16.
Do stripes affect the estimate?
Stripes are awarded by your academy and are not regulated by the IBJJF. Use the “months at current belt” field to account for progress already made.
Does this apply to kids belts?
No. Children under 16 follow the separate grey, yellow, orange and green belt system. The calculator covers the adult belts.
