Price from costs first, then check the market

Most owners copy the academy down the road. That price was set for a different rent, timetable and team. Start from your own costs and the membership you can actually reach, then compare with the market to decide whether to position above or below it.

If the price that pays you is far above the local market, the fix is rarely a lower price: it is more members per class, a second revenue line such as a kids programme, or lower fixed costs.

What family discounts really cost

Family and sibling discounts are great for retention, but they lower the average fee every member pays. If half your members get 20% off, your average member pays 10% less than the list price – so the list price has to be 11% higher to bring in the same revenue. The calculator shows that cost in money per month.

Pricing structures that work

  • One clear unlimited adult membership, plus a cheaper option for two classes a week.
  • Kids memberships priced separately, with a sibling discount.
  • Yearly plans at a 10–15% discount to lock in commitment and cash flow.
  • A paid trial week or intro month rather than a free class, to attract committed starters.
  • Class packs for shift workers who cannot commit to a weekly timetable.

Frequently asked questions

How much should I charge for martial arts classes?

Enough to cover your monthly costs and your salary at the membership you can realistically reach. Divide that total by your members, then gross it up for payment fees and discounts. Compare the result with local academies to decide your positioning.

Should a yearly membership be cheaper?

Usually yes – a 10–15% discount is common. Members get a better price, and you get commitment and cash up front, which smooths out the summer dip.

How big should a family discount be?

Commonly 10–25% for the second family member. Use the calculator to see how much it costs you each month and whether the list price needs to rise to compensate.

Should I show prices on my website?

Showing at least a starting price filters out people who would never join and builds trust with those who will. Academies that hide prices tend to get more enquiries that go nowhere.
