How the numbers are calculated
If a share c of members leaves every month, the average member stays 1 ÷ c months: 5% monthly churn means 20 months. Multiply by the monthly fee to get lifetime value.
To stay the same size, you must sign up as many members as you lose. If you keep signing the same number but lose fewer, the roster grows until losses match sign-ups again. The calculator shows that new, larger roster and the yearly revenue it adds.
Where students usually drop out
- In the first 90 days, before training becomes a habit.
- Just before or after a grading, when motivation dips.
- After an injury or a holiday break that is never followed up.
- When a timetable change no longer fits their week.
Practical ways to keep students longer
- Notice absences early: a message after two missed weeks brings many students back.
- Make progress visible with stripes, belt goals and attendance milestones.
- Give beginners a structured first month with a named coach.
- Offer a pause option instead of cancellation for injuries and holidays.
- Ask leavers why – a two-question exit survey shows patterns quickly.
Frequently asked questions
What is a good retention rate for a martial arts school?
Many academies lose 3–6% of members a month. Below 3% is strong; above 7% usually means beginners are not getting through their first months.
How do I calculate student lifetime value?
Divide 1 by your monthly churn rate to get the average months a student stays, then multiply by the average monthly fee. At 5% churn and a 100 fee, lifetime value is 2,000.
How much should I spend to get a new member?
Compare the cost of winning a member with their lifetime value. A ratio of 3× or more leaves room for coaching, rent and profit.
How do I measure churn?
Count members who cancelled or stopped paying during a month and divide by the active members at the start of that month. Use a three-month average to smooth out seasonal dips.
