Geup grades and belt colours
Both styles count ten geup grades down from 10th to 1st before black belt. ITF schools share a standard colour order — white, yellow, green, blue and red, with a stripe of the next colour on the in-between grades. WT schools choose their own colours, so the calculator shows geup numbers for WT.
How the estimate works
Coloured belts are often tested every two to four months, with longer gaps at the senior grades. Typical durations at three sessions a week add up to roughly three years to 1st dan, adjusted for your training frequency. Your school’s grading calendar sets the actual dates.
Poom or dan?
Kukkiwon awards a poom (junior black belt) instead of a dan to students under 15; it converts to the matching dan once the holder turns 15.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to get a black belt in taekwondo?
Usually 3–4 years for students training two to three times a week, sometimes faster in schools with frequent gradings.
What is the difference between WT and ITF belts?
Both use ten geup grades. ITF has a standard colour order; WT schools set their own colours. Patterns differ too: WT uses poomsae, ITF uses tul.
Is 1st geup the highest coloured belt?
Yes. Geup grades count down from 10th, so 1st geup is the last grade before 1st dan or poom.
